With Maya, you can create and animate your own 3D scenes and render them as still images or as animation sequences. Several versions of Maya exist and the difference between them lies in the features that are included in each. The commercial version of Maya includes everything you need to create and render 3D scenes and animations. A freely available version of Maya called the Personal Learning Edition is also available.

The Personal Learning Edition is identical to Maya Complete, except that all renderings include a watermark, making it a great place to start if you want to learn Maya. Becoming familiar with these various sets of controls makes the interface much easier to work with.

Along the top edge of the interface are the menus and a toolbar of buttons called the Status Line. Below the Status Line is a tabbed row of buttons. This row of buttons is called the Shelf, and it offers a convenient way to group sets of commands together. To the right of the interface is a panel of parameters called the Channel Box. These parameters, known as attributes, will change as different objects are selected.

Under the Channel Box is the Layer Editor. Along the bottom of the interface are the Time Slider, the Range Slider, and the animation controls, which are used to specify and move between the different frames of an animation sequence; also at the bottom are the Command Line, for entering textual commands, and the Help Line.

Finally, the horizontal column of buttons to the left of the interface is known as the Toolbox and the Quick Layout buttons. These buttons are used to select and transform scene objects and to change the interface layout. A key concept that you need to understand as you begin to work with the interface is that there are several ways to access the same command. For example, you can create a sphere using the Create, Polygon Primitives, Sphere menu command or by using the Polygon Sphere button in the Polygons shelf.

This design is intentional, allowing beginners an intuitive method for accessing a command, and giving advanced users an access method that lets them work quicker as they learn the shortcuts.

Chapter 1: Learning the Maya Interface 2 One of the quickest ways to access advanced-user commands is with the Secret menus. These context-specific pop-up menus appear when you right-click in the interface. Another quick way to access commands is with keyboard shortcuts, known as hotkeys. Maya gives users the option to customize the interface. Using the customization features, you can create a custom set of command icons, define keyboard shortcuts, and even alter menus.

Lesson 1. The commands are listed as text, making them easier to find until you learn what the various buttons do. Each menu can include several submenus. Submenus are identified by a small, right-pointing arrow at the right end of the menu. Changing Menu Sets The menus are dynamic and change depending on the menu set that is selected. You can change between the menu sets using the drop-down list that is to the very left of the Status Line, as shown in Figure Tip Each of the menu sets has an associated hotkey.

Pressing these hotkeys on the keyboard executes the command. Hotkeys provide a quick and easy way to execute a command, and learning to use them will make you much more efficient.

These box icons will open an Options dialog box for the selected command. These Options dialog boxes, such as the Group Options dialog box shown in Figure , include parameters that you can change.

They also include Apply buttons that let you apply the command with the given parameters without closing the dialog box. The option dialog box values are persistent. Any values that are changed will maintain their setting the next time the command is used. You can reset an options dialog box to its default values using the Edit, Reset Settings menu command in the dialog box menu. Clicking on this line makes the menu a tear-off menu and displays it as a separate panel, like the one shown in Figure , that you can move about by dragging on its title bar.

Tear-off menus are convenient because they make the menu commands accessible with one click, but you need the space to leave the tear-off menu open without covering something else.

Tools, when selected, are active until another tool is selected, but actions are only executed once. The last tool used is displayed at the bottom of the Toolbox for easy re-selection.

Tool settings are also persistent and can be reset using the Reset Tool button at the top of the Tool Settings interface. In the Polygon Sphere Options dialog box, click the Apply button. A single sphere objects will appear at the origin in the Workspace. Click the Close button to exit the dialog box. Click on the Create menu, and then select the Polygon Primitives submenu and click on the Cone menu command.

A cone object is added to the scene overlapping the sphere. Press the 5 key to see the objects as shaded objects. These buttons are constant and cannot be changed, but you can hide them. The buttons are divided into groups that are separated by a dividing bar.

Most of these button groups are presented and discussed in the lesson that corresponds to their features. Pop-up Help is available for all buttons in the entire interface.

This new cursor displays a small menu icon under the cursor arrow, like the one shown in Figure When this icon appears, you can right-click to access an additional menu of options. The cursor also changes when certain tools are used. Click again to make the buttons reappear.

Maya is a popular 3D animation tool, published by Autodesk. But it’s got a brutally steep learning curve, and can be intimidating for beginners. I really want to get into 3D animation with Maya, but I have no idea where to start.

For those who are considering getting into CGI animation , there are less expensive tools such as the open source Blender which can be used to create awesome films , though the learning curve is not necessarily any smaller than with its commercial counterparts.

Current and future game makers may also want to take a look at Unity3D. It provides an entire game engine for development, as well as the art asset creation tools necessary to produce a full game.

Maya, on the other hand, contains all of the tools to develop the art assets but you still need to export them to a game engine such as Unreal or Unity. Each learner has their own way of absorbing knowledge, especially when dealing with complex software. A few may be able to pick up a book, read it, and be able to effectively use the program.

But other people may need to work through hands-on exercises. Others may learn better by watching. We will consider all of these factors as we look at several options for learning how to use Autodesk Maya. There are four options in the Maya Help menu, each leading to a separate page on the Autodesk website or YouTube. These point to Autodesk endorsed tutorials, and basic learning material. The 1 Minute Startup Movies option contains seven videos, each under 2 minutes in length, which cover these areas: navigation essentials; creating and viewing objects; moving, rotating, and scaling; component selection; secret menus; keyframe animation; and materials, lights, and rendering.

It is primarily geared for individuals with experience using other modeling, animation, and rendering software who wish to get started with Maya quickly. The Maya Learning Channel on YouTube has dozens of tutorials ranging from beginner to advanced, showing different techniques using Maya. In particular, there is a playlist containing nine videos covering everything the beginner needs to know to start using Maya; from navigating the interface to manipulating and grouping objects to hotkeys and hidden menus.

SimplyMaya currently has three dozen free tutorials available for viewing along with over 1, others on their site. They use a very different model for distribution. You can add complete tutorials to a shopping cart, checkout, and download them in one shot. If you find you are only interested in some videos from one or more tutorials, it may be cheaper to buy video credits which can be used to purchase just the segments you want which works out to about 25 minutes of video per credit. Again, this is another site that is using industry professionals to create their tutorials, so you know they have real-world experience using Maya and it isn’t just another professional trainer whose only experience with the software came from creating the video.

This course contains more than 8 hours of video in 63 lectures led by Dariush Derahkshani – an award-winning visual effects supervisor. Although this doesn’t cover the latest version of the software, it still provides all of the building blocks that beginners need to know to use the software effectively, and covers every topic I have seen in courses covering the version so you should not consider the version number in the title to be off-putting.

In under 8 hours over videos, he leads you through everything you need to know about the Maya workflow and animation pipeline in an engaging manner. This is another one where members can download the video for offline consumption as well as access the exercise files that are used throughout the course to more easily follow along with the video demonstrations. There are currently more than 3, courses on the site with plenty of them covering advanced Maya and 3D topics, so you’re getting value for money.

Okay, this one is not specifically about Maya, but rather a book on 3D animation using Maya as the instructional tool. Yup, the same guy who did the video on Udemy mentioned above wrote this. It provides a step-by-step guide to build the necessary skills to gain mastery over Maya.

This book follows the same outline as the video with additional coverage of a few of the new features of the latest version of Maya, and appears to use the same sample content. If you’re doing his Udemy course, this would be a great companion guide. Though not released yet, this appears to be a complete treatment of everything you need to know to get much more than your feet wet with 3D animation using Maya.

The sample content available demonstrates an effective writing style with plenty of screenshots to clearly explain the interface and if the entire book continues in that vein, it will be utterly amazing. A CGTalk forum thread was started more than a decade ago dedicated to links to Maya tutorials. Many of the early ones are clearly outdated though some are still useful for the novice but there are some really incredible ones that are still being posted today.
