Photoshop Quick Tip: The Curvature Pen Tool (CC and later).

Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor and design program developed and marketed by Adobe Inc. Originally designed for the Apple Macintosh , development of Adobe Illustrator began in Along with Creative Cloud Adobe’s shift to monthly or annual subscription service delivered over the Internet , Illustrator CC was released.

The latest version, Illustrator , was released on October 26, , and is the 25th generation in the product line. Adobe Illustrator was reviewed as the best vector graphics editing program in by PC Magazine. Development of Adobe Illustrator for the Apple Macintosh began in [2] shipping in January as a commercialization of Adobe’s in-house font development software and PostScript file format. Adobe Illustrator is the companion product of Adobe Photoshop.

Photoshop is primarily geared toward digital photo manipulation and photorealistic styles of computer illustration , while Illustrator provides results in the typesetting and logo graphic areas of design. Early magazine advertisements featured in graphic design trade magazines such as Communication Arts referred to the product as “the Adobe Illustrator”. Illustrator 88, the product name for version 1. Byte in listed Illustrator 88 as among the “Distinction” winners of the Byte Awards, stating that with it Adobe had “pulled ahead” of previously industry-dominant competitor Aldus FreeHand.

Early versions of the software did not support working in preview mode and users needed to have two windows open on their desktop in order to have a live preview of their work. One window would show the work in progress and the other window would show a preview of the work in progress.

Although during its first decade Adobe developed Illustrator primarily for Macintosh, it sporadically supported other platforms. The first version of Illustrator for Windows, version 2. The next Windows version, version 4. Note that there were no versions 2.

And there was no version 6 for Windows. Version 4 was, however, the first version of Illustrator to support editing in preview mode, which did not appear in a Macintosh version until 5. Version 6 was the last truly Macintosh version of Illustrator. The interface changed radically with the following version to bring consistency between Mac and Windows computer platforms. The changes remained until CS6 when some small steps were taken to restore the app to a slightly more Mac-like interface.

With the introduction of Illustrator 7 in , Adobe made critical changes in the user interface with regard to path editing and also to converge on the same user interface as Adobe Photoshop , and many users opted not to upgrade. Like Photoshop, Illustrator also began supporting plug-ins, greatly and quickly extending its abilities. With true user interface parity between Macintosh and Windows versions starting with 7.

Adobe bought Aldus in for Page Maker. As a result, Macromedia acquired Free Hand in from its original developer, Altsys , and continued its development through Illustrator Version 9 included a tracing feature, similar to that within Adobe’s discontinued product Streamline.

Illustrator CS aka version 11 , released by Adobe for Mac and Windows in October , was the first version to include 3-dimensional capabilities allowing users to extrude or revolve shapes to create simple 3D objects. It was the last version for the Mac which did not run natively on Intel processors. Live Trace allows for the conversion of bitmap imagery into vector art and improved upon the previous tracing abilities.

Live Paint allows users more flexibility in applying color to objects, specifically those that overlap. Instead, Adobe would provide tools and support to ease the transition to Illustrator. Illustrator CS3 included interface updates to the Control Bar, the ability to align individual points, multiple Crop Areas, the Color Guide panel and the Live Color feature among others.

CS3 was released on March 27, CS4 was released in October It features a variety of improvements to old tools along with the introduction of a few brand-new tools acquired from FreeHand.

The ability to create multiple artboards is one of CS4’s main additions from Freehand. The artboards allow you to create multiple versions of a piece of work within a single document. Other tools include the Blob Brush, which allows multiple overlapping vector brush strokes to easily merge or join, and a revamped gradient tool allowing for more in-depth color manipulation as well as transparency in gradients.

CS5 was released in April Along with a number of enhancements to existing functionality, Illustrator CS5’s new features include a Perspective Grid tool taken from FreeHand, a Bristle Brush for more natural and painterly looking strokes and a comprehensive update to strokes, referred to by Adobe as “Beautiful Strokes”. The app had many of the features of Adobe Illustrator, yet it was a free download. This allowed professionals to sketch and ideate “on the go” and allowed anyone to access world-class vector drawing capabilities.

As a result, Facebook and social media posts appeared from all over the world with vector drawings from Adobe Ideas from pros and novices alike. Version CS6 was the 16th generation of Adobe Illustrator. Adobe added many more features and several bug fixes such as a new user interface, layer panels, RGB codes, and color ramp to increase performance. CS6 was released on April 23, This version the 17th was the first to be only sold in a subscription-based service model, in line with the other software in the formerly called Creative Suite.

As part of Creative Cloud, this version brought improvements in that subject such as color, font and program settings syncing, saving documents to the cloud, and integration with Behance a creative collaborative network , as well as other features such as a new touch-compatible type tool, images in brushes, CSS extraction, and files packaging.

Starting with version 1. John Warnock desired a Renaissance image to evoke his vision of PostScript as a new Renaissance in publishing, and Adobe employee Luanne Seymour Cohen, who was responsible for the early marketing material, found Venus’ flowing tresses a perfect vehicle for demonstrating Illustrator’s strength in tracing smooth curves over bitmap source images.

Over the years the rendition of this image on Illustrator’s splash screen and packaging became more stylized to reflect features added in each version. The image of Venus was replaced albeit still accessible via easter egg in Illustrator CS The CS4 icon is almost identical, except for a slight alteration to the font and the color which is dark gray. The CS5 icon is also virtually the same, except that this time the logo is like a box, along with all the other CS5 product logos, with the “Ai” bright yellow.

CS6 changed it a bit to a brown square with a yellow border and yellow lettering, and in CC the colors were upgraded to a sharper tone and thinner borders. Compatibility with Inkscape : [18] Inkscape’s native format is SVG Scalable Vector Graphics , which is supported by Adobe Illustrator, but the two implementations are not fully compatible. A sidebar that appears at the left of the screen with a variety of tools to select, create, and manipulate objects or artworks in Illustrator.

These tools can be selected as following: drawing, typing, painting, reshaping, slicing and cutting, symbolism, moving and zooming, and graph. A small triangle has the option to view or expand some hidden tools by holding down the mouse button on the triangle. Some examples of basic tools in Illustrator are selection tools, paintbrush tools, pen tools, pencil tools e. Selection tools are used to the layout, adjust, and organize the artwork by selecting, positioning, and stacking objects accurately.

Moreover, selection tools can group, lock or hide, and measure objects. There are different types of brushes: calligraphic, scatter, art, pattern, and bristle. Pencil tools allow the user to draw and edit freehand lines. Illustrator Draw is a free-form vector drawing app for Android and iOS users.

Drawings made with the Illustrator Draw app can be exported to the desktop programs of Adobe Illustrator. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Vector graphics editor from Adobe Inc. Adobe Inc. Drawing paths using the Curvature Pen tool 4 Once you finished setting the points, right click on your path and select stroke path to apply your actual brush over the path. Drawing paths using the Curvature Pen tool 5 Sometimes, especially when inking short curved lines with lots of turning points, avoiding the Curvature Pen tool altogether and drawing freehand using the smoothing effect has better results while being less time consuming. Drawing sun-shadow transitions using the Curvature Pen tool 1 First you must set the basic curve and avoid using too many points along the path.

Drawing sun-shadow transitions using the Curvature Pen tool 2 As soon as the path is stroked by your preset brush size when applying sun-shadow transitions at dpi it would be 10 pixels for sun line move the upper portion of your path to create the transition points. Drawing sun-shadow transitions using the Curvature Pen tool 3 Stroking the second path gives us the right effect by resulting in a nice and even sun-shadow transition.

Repeat the steps for the M curve. Follow the directions in the previous example to get to the point of an M shaped curve.

Click to add a point beneath the other three points. In the middle, the shape of the heart begins forming. Finally, point to the first point you created, without clicking. A small circle appears by the pointer.

It tells you that your mouse is hovering over the initial starting point. Click on the circle to close the path and form a closed loop. The pen tool will automatically stop drawing on completion of a closed path. You could now select the path from the Paths palette and convert it to a selection, export it to Illustrator or save it for later use. If you point to an existing point, you see a — sign, meaning that if you click here, you will delete the existing point.

Rubberband option. This is found under the Geometry option in the options bar. Stop struggling with selections. Learn how to select and cut out anything from people, hair, trees, complex shapes and even transparency. Discover how to get perfect edges, without halos and jaggies. Colin shows you exactly how in 18 lessons. All the images are included for you to follow along. You will be able to select and cut out anything: faster and cleaner.

What happened? I just want to draw paths, NOT filled shapes; just want to save them as work paths, select them, and maybe make them clipping paths. Where did the simplicity go? There are 3 options in the top left corner. Pixel, Shape Layer and Path. Make sure you select the path option. The pen tool is actually better now in CC, you just need to select the right options. Let me know id you still have problems.

Not a CC conspiracy after all — just user error! Why is this bait and switch? Do you even know what that term means? This is a free tutorial, Im not trying to sell you anything, so there is nothing to bait and switch. If you want to draw a perspective grid, then search for that. Now if you would consider asking nicely, I might consider helping you. I am so glad I found this! This opens many doors for me and I thank you for providing this service.

However, when I use the pen tool in the path setting it does not create the path on a layer. Is there a better way to create straight lines and nice curves on a map so that I can match the new path with existing line widths on the map layer? Let’s see how it works! As with the previous Curvature Pen Tool tutorial, this one is only for Photoshop CC users or later if you’re reading this in the future.

Let’s get started! If you created a custom workspace in Photoshop CC or earlier and you’re using that same workspace in CC , you may find that the new Curvature Pen Tool is missing from your Toolbar. To see the workspace you’re currently using, go up to the Window menu in the Menu Bar and choose Workspace. Here, we see that I’m using a custom workspace named Steve.

Even though I’m using this custom workspace in Photoshop CC , the workspace itself was created and saved back in CC Let’s get started!

Even though I’m using this custom workspace in Photoshop CC , the workspace itself was created and saved back in CC This means it was created before the Curvature Pen Tool was added to Photoshop:.

Yet when I click and hold on the Pen Tool icon to view the additional tools behind it, the Curvature Pen Tool is not there:. We need to select all three anchor points that make up the top the point in the top left, the top right, and the one at the top of the arch.

To select all three points at once, click and drag a box around all three points with the Direct Selection Tool:. Then, with all three points at the top selected, click on any of them and drag all three of them downward together:.

Finally, let’s take what we’ve learned about curve and corner points and use it to draw a path in the shape of a heart. When we’re done, we’ll finish off this tutorial by learning how to turn the path into an actual shape, as well as a vector mask and a selection outline. Then, click in the upper left, where the first vertical guide on the left intersects with the second horizontal guide from the top. This adds a second point, and since we only have two points at the moment, Photoshop draws a straight path segment between them:.

To add the third point, click where the top horizontal guide intersects with the second vertical guide from the left. Since this is our third point, Photoshop converts the straight path segment into a curve:. We need to add our fourth point at the spot where the second horizontal guide from the top meets the vertical guide in the center. But, because we know we need this point to be a corner point, not a curve point, double-click to add it:.

Next, click where the top horizontal guide intersects with the second vertical guide from the right. Even though we’re adding this point as a curve point by single-clicking , Photoshop will initially draw a straight path segment.

That’s because our previous point was a corner point:. To add the next point, click where the first vertical guide from the right meets the second horizontal guide from the top. Photoshop once again converts the straight path into a curve:. Finally, let’s close the path and complete our heart shape by clicking on the initial starting point at the bottom.

We need this point to be a corner point, not a curve, so complete the path by double-clicking on the starting point:. We’re done drawing with the Curvature Pen Tool, so let’s remove the guides by going up to the View menu in the Menu Bar, choosing Show , and then choosing Guides to deselect them:. Now that we’ve drawn our path, Photoshop makes it easy to convert the path into either a selection outline , a vector mask or a shape.

Simply choose the one you need:. Photoshop will open the Make Selection dialog box. Here, you can add some feathering to the selection if needed, or just click OK to close the dialog box:. I’ll undo it so we can look at the other two options by going up to the Edit menu and choosing Undo Selection Change. Photoshop converts the path into a vector mask , with only the area inside the path remaining visible in the document.

The checkerboard pattern now surrounding the path represents transparency, since we have no other layers below the mask:. And if we look in the Layers panel , we now see a vector mask thumbnail :. I’ll undo the vector mask so we can look at the third option by going up to the Edit menu and choosing Undo Add Vector Mask.
